Copa America Semi Final

 Copa America Semi Final

Today morning I watched the Copa America Semi Final between Chile and Peru. It was a fast paced encounter with Chile having a slight upper hand. It was a thrilling, pulsating and electrifying match worth watching foregoing little sleep. On several occasions match turned rough and Referee had a tough time to control the match. Football refereeing is a tough job compared to cricket umpiring. Of all the teams participated in the Copa America, Columbia was the roughest team. All the members of Columbian team barring James Rodriquez   played rough game. If there is a best fouler award, definitely a Columbian will win it.
Vargas made it 1-0 for Chile before half time, which was neutralized by a self goal by a Chile defender. I was worried whether the better team will bow out of the competition in the penalty shootout. Fortunately Vargas scored one more goal in the second half making it 2-1. It was a rasping long range shot which gave no chance to the diving Peru goal keeper. Goalkeepers of both sides gave a splendid display under the bar.
The coaches and managers were wearing heavy jackets, even multiple jackets which give an idea of the cold climate. Despite that players wearing only a T shirt were sweating profusely. The amount of energy loss in 90 Minutes soccer may be more than one day cricket. Whether any method is there to measure the energy consumption (Not Electricity) is not clear. When a player is substituted, the distance covered by that player is indicated. I remember in a world cup match, Arjen Robben of Holland ran 17 KM in 80 minutes. How much the Referee and linesmen had to run is not given, perhaps because they are not substituted.

Tomorrow the 4 time world footballer of the year Lionel Messi will be in action for Argentina against Paraguay in the other semi final. Another pulsating match in the offing.

Ardhanari

Ardhanari

My first Boss in BEL was late Shri B Ramachandra Rao. He was very good in drafting and noting. I learned nuance of drafting from him. (I had started writing Letters to Editor before joining BEL and my first letter appeared in The Hindustan Times on 13th June 1973). Many of my draft letters were approved by him without any correction. My colleagues used to say that I am a good draftsman, though I do not know the ABCD of drawing.  Perhaps knowing my drafting skill, Mr. Rao drafted me to Government Audit Cell. Even after transfer from Audit Department, dealing with Government Audit continued to remain with me for a long time.
As a part of liaison with Government Audit, I used to go to Railway station to welcome the Audit party coming from Bangalore. All f them were simple and humble and even the very senior officers used to come by train only and stayed in Guest houses instead of 5 star hotels.  Most of the members of the party were known to me and was very friendly with me so much so that if I request to drop a Para, they will drop it (I never used or misused that trust). In case a new party comes, I used to ask the stranger “Are you Mr. Ramakrishna? Etc.
Once a Government Auditor scheduled to come, was visiting BEL GAD for the first time, while the other team members came separately after 2 days.  Before proceeding to Railway Station I told Shri. Rao that this time I am not sure whether I will be able to bring him from Railway station.  I told him that I will not be able to ask the usual question, as it will be harmful for my body. When my boss enquired as to what is the problem, I told him that his name is “Ardhanari”.

An Appeal to Advocates

Why the crime rate is increasing?
The crime prevention detection and prosecution process in India is abysmally slow. This coupled with half hearted approach of the law enforcement authorities and innumerable loopholes in the legal system ensures that only a negligible percentage of the accused are convicted. It is paradoxical that in a country having plethora of laws, degree of lawlessness is also the highest. According to agency reports only six percent of the accused are convicted in India. This percentage will further make a nosedive considering the fact that many crimes are not reported and many others, which are reported, are not recorded by the law enforcement agencies. There is a popular joke that whereas American and Scotland Yard police catch the culprit within hours of committing the crime, Indian police is well aware of the impending crime hours before is being committed. No wonder the crime rate whether it is robbery, dacoity, murder, bride burning, corruption, scams, scandals or gang rape – are increasing at an alarming rate.
There is no fear of punishment resulting that desperadoes roaming in large numbers with total impunity. It is not the severity of punishment but the certainty of punishment which will be a deterrent from committing crime. Criminals know that they can escape from the clutches of law if they are having money and muscle power. The concept of Equality before law enchained in our Constitution has become a myth as dispensation of justice is different between the rich and poor, haves and have-nots, mighty and weak, seasoned criminals and ignorant unabiders of law. While thousands of under-trials (who know how many of them are innocent?) are languishing in various jails for years, people who committed heinous crimes and amassed ill-gotten wealth are freely moving in the society with almost total impunity and with black cat security. Time and again we confirm the popular perception that law is like a cobweb where the weak and poor are trapped in and the rich and mighty breaks it.

Our legal system is heavily tilted in favour of criminals. Death penalty is awarded in rarest of rare cases after a multi layer judicial process. Even after rejecting the mercy petition by the President of India, death penalty is not executed on flimsy grounds. There are several organizations and individuals to support and argue for the dreaded criminals and plea for their mercy conveniently forgetting the macabre act committed by them. However, there is nobody to argue for the hapless family members, relatives and friends of the victims. The protagonists of abolition of death penalty argue that death penalty is inhuman. Killing of innocent persons by the most morbid method and massacre of masses by bombing and firing is human? Many criminals are living a lavish life in the prisons. It was reported that a criminal who molested and thrown a teenage girl from a running train near Shoranur in Kerala has improved his weight and health in prison.

Some self styled social organisations and human rights activists appears to be more concerned about the rights of criminals rather than protecting the basic right (right to live) of the innocent and hapless citizens. I do not understand how a person who masterminded/committed cold blooded, barbaric, heinous, gruesome, traumatic murder-nay- massacre deserves clemency. Very few human rights activists appear to be concerned about the plight of undertrials languishing in various prisons for years, many of them may be innocent. Country cannot afford to spend crores of money for the protection of these criminals by prolonging the Death penalty. Nobody appears to be bothered about the sorrows, sufferings and trauma of the families of victims of these horrible crimes. A hardened criminal if comes out of the jail after commuting his death penalty to life imprisonment will be unacceptable to the society. In all likelihood he will create a reign of terror and will become a perpetual hazard to the society.  He may continue to commit crime in order to return to jail instead of living in isolation and untouchable in the society.

A national debate on death penalty may be initiated. Opinions may be obtained from the families of all the victims killed during the last few years from the length and breadth of the country. If majority of them suggest that death penalty should not be abolished, a decision contrary to this will be tantamount to adding insult to injury and rubbing salt on their wounds. After loss of near and dear ones under the most tragic, cruel and horrible circumstances, the sole consolation and solace for the bereaved family and the departed soul is providing the maximum permissible punishment to the perpetrator of the crime.  The need of the hour is to have a fresh thinking on the implementation of death penalty, whether by the medieval method of hanging or some other scientific method. Abolition of death penalty without the concurrence and approval of the concerned and aggrieved parties will be a travesty of justice.

Our media and leading lawyers also play a pivotal role in increasing the crime. Many media reports looks as if they are glorifying the crime and making the criminal a hero.  Such unwanted, unnecessary and unjustified publicity to the hardened criminals will have far reaching ramifications and will create indelible impression in the impregnable minds of the youth and adolescents and will induce some of them to take crime as a passion.  Lawyers are supposed to fight for justice or fight against injustice. Unfortunately, today we do not have lawyers of the caliber and character of the status of Late Nani Palkhivala. Most of the so called leading lawyers prefer to fight for corrupt politicians, terrorists, murderers, rapists, scamsters etc because they can make huge money out of that. How many of the leading lawyers fight for justice to the poor and under privileged and to protect those who are wrongly implicated in some case?  If the leading lawyers refrain from fighting the case of hardened criminals, they will not be able to escape from the long arm of law. People, who think that money is supreme, can throw the social, moral and ethical values to the dustbin. They will be able to live an ostentatious life, but ultimately have to pay for their sin at some or other point of time.

I earnestly appeal to all my fellow friends and citizens to make a society free from crimes or at least do their mettle in order to reduce the crime drastically. People who support and plead the case of hardened criminals are emboldening the other potential criminals and thereby helping to create a criminal country. The same people can also help to make an egalitarian society free from evils and crimes. They have to decide whether their personal preference in filling up their coffers (even a small portion of which they will never be able to use during their life time) is more important than the greater national interest. After all, as a responsible and patriotic citizen of the country, everyone has a duty towards the society and country. If you cannot help the society and country, at least desist from making incalculable harm to the country.  Those who directly or indirectly help to perpetrate crime will prey to their own misdeeds as on many occasions their actions boomerang.  The country which has given birth to several sages, scholars and social reformers and was once the torch bearer of world civilization does not deserve such a pathetic situation.

Indigestion ?

Indigenization or Indigestion?

During my tenure in BEL, I worked in various departments. Wherever I worked, one extra job always added to my work i.e.; Government Audit. I had the opportunity and privilege to work with senior officers of C&AG, COPU (Committee on Public Sector Undertakings) etc. I was entrusted with the job of replying to Government Audit queries/ reports etc. Since my handwriting was poor (or very poor?) the PA of my Boss was prepared to take dictation from me, (though I was never been a Dictator) because he felt that it was far better than reading the illegitimate handwritten note.
Once there was an Audit Enquiry regarding Indegenisatioin. The company had given an understanding to the Government that it will gradually indigenize the products and within- years it will be completely indigenized. However, indigenization was moving at a snail pace. I sent the enquiry to all the concerned departments, but nobody gave a reply leave alone convincing reply. Then I enquired from the concerned the department as to the total number of items in the equipment including nuts, bolts and screws. It was running into thousands and I was told that small items have been indigenized and now they are assembling the equipment in the factory. (Screw driver technology?). I gave a reply to Audit that -% of the items have been indigenized. (Though the value of items indigenized is negligible). When the first draft reply was made the heading went like this
“Government Audit Enquiry on Indigestion”

Peacock as Pacer

Peacock as pacer

Last Saturday we had a trial run at the picturesque Okhla Bird sanctuary, Noida. We were running in batches. I started with the first batch along with 2 lead runners. I was able to keep pace with them for a few minutes and afterwards the gap increased and subsequently they had gone out of my Radar range. I reached a T point (it was a wrong point) and I was confused whether to go right or left. I waited for some time, looked towards left, right and down. After few minutes I could identify 2 runners of our group running below. I climbed down and started running. When I reached the underpass, I realized that I am on the right track as I had gone there once earlier.
On the road to Bird sanctuary it was a fascinating run as bird’s enchanting music was on the one side and lake view on the other side. After running a few hundred meters a peacock accompanied me perhaps knowing that s senior citizen is running all alone.  He was walking, running and flying to be together with me. On many occasions he was at a handshaking distance. After reaching the end of the road he bid adieu to me wishing good luck before going to his home. Thank you peacock, I enjoyed your company and will cherish it. We will meet again on the same day, same time ------- (date to be decided later).

MTNL

MTNL

My MTNL internet connection is out of order for the last 3 days. I made several telephone calls to MTNL, and every time I was told that it will be set right immediately. The lady attending the call was co operative, as she has repeatedly told the concerned person to rectify the fault. Today morning when I again made a call, she gave me two more numbers with a request to contact another person. I made repeated calls but nobody picked the phone. Earlier the telephone department was having complete monopoly, but today the situation is different. Several customers are surrendering their connections. However, many employees do not realize that if the services are not improved, the very existence of the organization will be in peril. While the internet and communication facility is one of the fastest growing fields of the economy, business of BSNL and MTNL are dwindling.  Though there may be several reasons for this declining trend, unsatisfactory service of these organizations is a predominant factor. Many of the employees including officers believe in the ABCD method of working and practice it one by one.
A for               Avoid
B for                Bypass
C for               Confuse
D for               Delay

Let us fervently hope that these premier organizations will not be required to be admitted in ICCU and large number of its family members (customers) will not be forced to weep for its premature death due to the self inflicted injury/disease.

It will not be out of point to mention that with the onset of competition services of Public Sector Banks have been improved tremendously.

NAFED

Nafed

During June 1974 I joined a new organization. On the first day of joining, while returning from the office in the evening, one friend asked me “I heard that you joined a new company”.  “Yes I joined a BIG company”. When he asked the name of the company I asked him to wait for a minute. I took out the Diary and read out the name “National Agricultural Co-operative Marketing Federation of India Limited “popularly known as NAFED.
During November 1974, I got a job in BEL. The offer of appointment of NAFED says that I have to give 15 days’ notice.  I gone through the letter carefully and found a clause like this “Your appointment will be temporarary for a period for a period of 6 months which can be extended on mutual agreement”. I gave a letter quoting this clause and stating that I do not want to extend the period. Completion of 6 months in NAFED and joining time of BEL coincided,

Memory Power

Memory Power

About 40 years ago, everything was controlled by the Government including cement, sugar etc. There were posts like Cement Controller, Sugar Controller etc. If you apply for sugar for marriage purpose or cement for house construction, you may get 10 % of the quantity you applied for. Some smart people make exaggerated estimates and get extra quantity.  A few Government offices were flooded with controllers like Assistant Controller, Deputy Controller, Joint Controller, Chief Controller, Joint Chief Controller, Additional Controller and Deputy Chief Controller etc etc. People were not able to make out which is the higher post and which is the lower post. Perhaps getting inspiration from these controls, hurdles and cumbersome procedures, Malayalam novelist E Vasu wrote a novel under the title “Chuvappu  Nada” means red tape.
In an office there was one person whose job was to liaise with these departments. Daily he goes to some or other ministries or departments. He was an absent minded person. One day he told his boss. “Sir, my memory power is improved. Earlier I used to go to Ministry without taking the file. This time I realized at ITO and came back”.

Copa America

Copa America

Today I woke up at 4.30 AM to watch the Copa America match between Argentina and Uruguay. Time of the match was shown 4.45 AM on Wednesday. When I switched on the TV there was no semblance of soccer match.  NBA matches were going on. I again checked up the newspaper to confirm the timings and it was the same time. Anyway, I used the time to write a mini article. Before leaving the house for swimming, I again checked up the position and it was showing the timings of the match at 6.30 AM. I cut short my swimming session and fortunately, I got a lift and reached home by 6.45 AM. The match was still not there. When I checked up the news channel, I found that Argentina defeated Uruguay by 1-0 margin. It appears that the match was played some time before 4.30AM. I thought of filing a suit against the Newspaper and the channel for misguiding me and large number of readers and viewers.  This reminds me about an old incident. One of my colleagues, after completing his LLB with high marks was confused whether he will file a suit or suit a file.

World Cup Qualifier

World cup Qualifier
India lost to Guam 2-1 in a world cup qualifying match.  India losing a match is not news but Guam is a small island in the western pacific with a population of just 1.6 Lacs. Further they are 33 ranks below India in the world cup rankings, India being 147 and Guam 174.  It is as if we are losing to a kid. Indian teams are coached by foreign coaches for a long time, but our standard is declining day by day. Present coach is Stephen Constantine.   During the last 2 decades, we have produced only 2 players i.e.; Baichung Butia   and Sunil Chetri who can be considered to be at least of Asian standard. I quote from my article written few years ago, the contents of which are still relevant.
We are having good football coaches like Habib, P.K.Banerji, Chattunni, Nayeemuddin, Sukhvinder Singh etc. However, inspite of having good coaches in the country, we engage foreign coaches who are themselves failures in their own country by paying fabulous fees, which is many times more than the fees paid to their Indian counterparts. Indian football reached its nadir during the stewardship of Rustom Akramov, a Russian coach. He committed the biggest blunder by asking Joe Paul Anchery to play in the defence. Anchery is a lethal striker and even now he has the temptation to overlap and assume the role of a forward. However, for us Indians, foreigner’s words are like priest’s sermons and we meekly accepted the blunder.
Football was the most popular sport in the country till few years ago and several national level tournaments were being held at various parts of the country. Even in a tiny state like Kerala 7 national level tournaments were being held. In other words, 7 out of 10 district headquarters were hosting major tournaments. In those days, matches were being played in front of jam packed gallery and many had to return disappointed without getting ticket. DCM trophy football tournament was one of the prestigious tournaments in the country and many popular teams from South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Iran etc used to participate in that tournament. Even the king of football Pele representing Cosmos Club New York participated n a friendly match with Mohun Bagan at salt lake stadium Calcutta.
Golden era of Indian football was in the sixties. India was soccer champions at 1962. Jakarta Asian games.  India reached quarter finals of 1960 Rome Olympics and we were in a tough group comprising Hungary, France and Peru. We lost to Hungary by a narrow margin of 2-1 and drew 1-1 with powerful France. India qualified for the 1950 World Cup by default due to withdrawal of their scheduled opponents but did not play on trivial grounds.  We can remember those days with nostalgia only. Today we find it difficult to beat minnows like Nepal, Bhutan etc. in SAF games.
How long we have to wait to see India to become a super power in soccer?

20th June 2015

After an 8.2 KM Trial Run at the picturesque Okhla Bird sanctuary Noida on 20th June

M S Subbulakshmi

M S Subbulakshmi
Today is the World Music Day. I send my greetings to all the music lovers on this day. I take this opportunity to pay my humble tributes to one of the greatest musicians the world has ever produced, the inimitable Dr M S Subbulakshmi, the doyen of Carnatic music. Apart from the fact that she was a great musician, she was also an embodiment of human virtues like honesty, integrity, morality, love, compassion, simplicity, sincerity, etc. She was recipient of several awards like Ramon Magsaysay Award, Kalidas Samman, and Bharat Ratna etc. She had given more than 200 charity concerts and donated substantial portion of her income for charity. How many of the present day artists give charity concerts and donate for philanthropic activities, is anybody’s guess.
Few years ago, I wrote a letter to her and in reply she sent a signed photograph along with her husband Shri. K Sadasivam, which is a priceless possession in my collection.
On this occasion of World Music day, I pay my humble tributes the legendary musician who enthralled the world from generation to generation

Give Support not Sympathy

Give support, not sympathy
Recently I came across few FB posts where friends have put news paper cuttings relating to spectacular victories of some poor students belonging to various parts of the country. Fighting against all odds and poverty, these children achieved amazing victories in the school final examination. One of the students used to work as domestic help in 5 houses to support her family and ailing father. Another student’s parents are working as peanut sellers. Living in abject poverty and not even able to afford two square meals a day, these children achieved very high marks in the examination. Many friends gave their likes and few offered their comments
I requested the friends who posted these in FB to get details of their bank accounts etc so that willing people can provide some small help.  I suggested my friends that these poor and bright students need support and not sympathy, but nobody bothered to get these details. I do not know how many of the bright students from poor families will be able to pursue their higher studies. It will be foolish to expect anything from the corrupt politicians and insensitive bureaucracy.
All the friends are requested that in case they are not able to collect the details of the hapless students, kindly get the full details of the newspaper in which the news appeared viz; Name of the Newspaper, place of publication, date of publication, page number in which the news item appeared etc so that I can try to contact the newspaper office and collect the required details. After getting the details, request all the friends to donate at least Rs 100/=by bank transfer.  No NGO, Trust or Team Leader is required to collect the amount and remit to the beneficiary. In fact many NGOs are only in paper and they are formed with the declared objective of social service but with the hidden agenda of looting the public money. Several NGOs are owned by politicians and what social service they are doing is anybody’s guess. Perhaps for politicians, social service means service to self and kith and kin.  I hope that all FB users will be able to do net banking transactions. In the unlikely event of anyone’s inability, he/she can take the help of their own family members or close friends. All these are required to ensure that the money goes to the needy and there is no intermediary who will swindle the money. If anyone feels that Rs 100/= is high, he/she can contribute anything they can afford.  Nobody will come to know as to how much they have contributed, so they need not hesitate to contribute any amount. There is a lot of difference between substantial contribution from one organization/Individual and small contribution from large number of people, and the latter will be a great motivating factor.
I am sure that a student who could pursue his/her higher studies with public support will turned out to be a gem of a citizen and will be an embodiment of human virtues like honesty, integrity, morality, simplicity, live, compassion, patriotism etc. There is a dire need for such people as many of the human virtues are being confined to dictionaries. Evils like rape, murder, dacoity, scams, scandals, corruption, adulteration, etc are increasing at an alarming rate and if this trend continues unabated, the country will soon go to devils. There is an urgent need to check and counter these menace and only persons with courage and conviction can take up this daunting task.
Come on Friends, let us join hands together to produce some good citizens and thereby protect the nation from ruin. Let us help our hapless and bright children to bring peace, tranquility and prosperity to our great land of sages, scholars and social reformers. Heaven and Hell are here only. You can make this a heaven or convert it into a Hell. Choice is yours.

Message from SAI

Lot of thanks Friends.
I am reproducing an extracts of message received from Sports Authority of India. I am particularly happy and thrilled because I have been pursuing this case for a long time. I wrote to 86 eminent organizations and individuals soliciting support for this poor talented athlete. Also I wrote to Athletic Federation of India, DG Sports Authority of India, Secretary Ministry of Sports, and Minister of sports and at last to the Prime Minister of the country.  I also filed an RTI application and was planning to file a PIL. I would like to express my profound gratitude to all my friends for their moral support and encouragement. Special thanks to Shri Subhash Nair of SAI for his invaluable help. May I solicit your continued support and encouragement to enable me to continue my crusade in creating a mass awakening about injustice and social evils with a view to fulfill our dream of an egalitarian society ?.

Message from SAI regarding O P Jaisha.
“Though she is not included in TOP scheme, her case will be considered under the NSDF scheme which is the main scheme of TOP. Under this scheme she can go to any of the training centres abroad and her whole expenditure will get funded fully by the Government. which is not a bad idea. The TOP will now not include any player but will start to watch the current performance of the players included in it and according to the performance only they will be funded.”

Athletics Telecast

Athletics Telecast- My Message and AFI’s Reply.

·         In spite of having several sports channels, no channel had shown the live telecast of the prestigious Asian Athletic Championship concluded 2 days ago at Wuhan China. AFI should take up the matter with the appropriate authorities and take necessary action to avoid this step motherly treatment to Athletics. Athletics is the most glamorous and toughest sports and definitely it deserves a better deal. We were deprived of some thrilling and pulsating moments of the game and lost some golden opportunities to cheer Indian athletes and thereby create a nationality feeling in a country otherwise divided by caste, creed, region, religion language etc. Kindly ensure that such maltreatment to athletics will not happen in future.

Message 4 to AFI

Message 4 to AFI

SAI Meeting

In continuation to my earlier messages, I have to further submit the following. I understand that TOP Committee made the selection of athletes for TOP program based on their past record and not based on present performances. While this may not have made much difference in the case of most of the athletes, as they are pursuing the same sport and same item for several years, in the case of OP Jaisha this has made a significant difference. Jaisha switched over to marathon at the instance ofher coach barely 6 months back and since then she participated in only one marathon i.e. SCMM in January 2015. However, the fact remains that she broke 20 year old record on her debut which is unprecedented, unparalled and amazing in the annals of athletic history. As per AFI’s information and monitoring, she is one of the finest athletes today and improving regularly, but for others there is no evidence in black and white to show her consistent progress because she did not participate in any official marathon meet since then. Selection based on past record may prove faulty, irrational and illogical in some cases. A classic example is the selection of Yuvaraj Singh by the Delhi Daredevils Team based on his spectacular past records. The astronomical amount of Rs 16 crores paid by the team to acquire him proved too costly as cost of one run works out to Rs 8.5 lacs. Jaisha’s timing in the debut performance cannot be taken as yardstick for her selection to TOP as there will be considerable improvement from the debut timings. Variation or improvement from the previous record may be minimal in the case of those athletes who have been practicing the same item for several years. I am a 65 year old half marathoner and I clocked 2:44.0 on my debut and my latest timing is 2:14:43. I am sending a table showing my performance record along with full details which can be verified from the net. Therefore, it appears that an inadvertent misjudgment of facts has been made in the case of Jaisha.A God sent golden opportunity has come in the way of AFI in the form of another crucial meeting to reconsider the left out candidates and I am sure that AFI will not allow slipping this opportunity by fiercely fighting her case to include her in TOP programme. The meeting which was scheduled to be held on 22nd (not 19th as wrongly mentioned in my previous message) has been postponed.  A fauxpas happened earlier should not be allowed to repeat.

Wishing all the best to Jaisha, AFI and the sports fans of the country.

E M Adithyan

NB: - The postponed meeting will be held on 15th June.

Childhood Ambition

Velichappad

As a child I wanted to become a Velichappad (Oracle-Mediator between God and devotees in a Temple, predominantly in Kerala). Velichappad is the most popular person of the village and he is adored by all.  Late Shri Gopalan Nair was the Velichappad of our nearby Kulangara Bhagawathi temple. He also comes to our Illam once in a year for “Parayeduppu”. His ceremonial dance before the deity with utmost devotion and profound passion was a treat to watch. Subsequently, I realized that my childhood hero is not only popular in the village but also at several other places in Malabar area. Despite being a great Velichappad, he did not switch over his allegiance to more popular and rich temples where he could have earned more income. But during those days, principles, ideology, devotion, dedication loyalty etc were dearer to people than money. This is in sharp contrast to today’s scenario where even multimillionaires are traded like commodities because money is sup

reme to them and human virtues are secondary.

Shri Gopalan Nair, Velichappad of Kulangara temple was a doyen of this art form. No wonder, M T Vasudevan Nair requested this legend to give training to the legendary actor P J Antony for his popular role of Velichappad in the award winning film Nirmalyam. Shri Gopalan Nair’s talent, dedication and devotion can be determined from the fact that his student won the National Award for the Best Actor for his portrayal of the lead role in the popular award winning film Nirmalyam in 1974. The film also won the National Film Award for the best feature film.

P J Antony’s performance in the film was only a fraction of his versatile Guru’s reservoir of resources.  Unfortunately, such spectacular feats were not filmed by anybody for the benefit of the future generation. Words are insufficient to narrate this fascinating story. Shri Gopalan Nair died at the age of 92 in the year 2014.

My humble tribute to the legendary Velichappad Late Shri Gopalan Nair. A big salute to Shri M T Vasudevan Nair, the celebrated Malayalam writer. It was his debut film as a Director and Nirmalyam is considered as a classic in Malayalam cinema. My humble tributes to the late P J Antony the main actor and all those who contributed immensely to make that film a grand success. Since all the locations of the film are familiar and close to my village, I have a sentimental attachment to the film. Despite having a plethora of TV Channels, we are not able to see such classical films again.

Please share your childhood ambition.

Language of Animals

Language of Animals

Domestic animals understand the language of their masters. Pets of those living in towns and cities may understand one more language in addition to his/her mater’s language. For example, the dog of a Malayali living in Delhi may understand Hindi in addition to Malayalam. But what about other creatures who encroached upon your area like lizards, rats etc. In this connection I am reproducing an extract from my humorous article

“           Mr.Ramlal, a Central Government employee got the allotment of a ground floor flat after waiting for 30 years in a semi-posh south Delhi colony. After he started staying in the flat, Ramlal noticed that rats were freely roaming in his flat. He started abusing them in Hindi, Haryanvi and Punjabi but there was no reaction. He told his neighbour Mr. Chatterji about the incident. Mr. Chatterji got the clue that since the previous occupant of the flat was a Tamilian, perhaps the rats understand only Tamil and a little bit of Bengali. Next day Ramlal purchased a book on learning Tamil through Hindi and hurled the choicest abuses in Tamil. The result was instant. At least they avoided coming in front of Ramlal.”

English Speaking Course

English Speaking course

One day I got a colourful, impressive pamphlet along with the newspaper. It was about an institute which imparts excellent coaching in English speaking. I dialed the number and a girl (May be Receptionist) attended the phone. Since I phoned to an institution providing English Speaking Course, I spoke in English. I noticed the girl was fumbling, so I asked her “Principal se baat kara deejiye”.  The Principal was also not able to converse fluently in English.  I was wondering what type of excellent coaching they provide to their students. May be they are conducting Hinglish speaking course with words like Dhoonting (Searching) Barishing (Raining) etc.

General

General

The designation of some top posts appears to be too general.  For example the Chief of Army Staff is designated as General. In contrast to this designation of Chief of Air Staff i.e.; Air Chief Marshal appears to be somewhat better. Even in Army some lower ranks like Colonel, Brigadier etc sounds much better. Should we make a special designation for general?

An Appeal to Celebrities

An appeal to Celebrities

Celebrities are expected to be role models as general public put immense faith and confidence on them. Without belittling their talent and effort in achieving the celebrity status, it is an irrefutable fact that more than their talent and effort it is the public support which helped them to gain celebrity status. There are innumerable talented people in various fields who are unknown, unheard and unsung leave alone getting at least a VIP status. India is the world champions in Kabaddi. How many of us know the name of at least the captain of our team?  Common man eulogies the celebrities treat them as demy Gods; shower them with praise and encomiums.  They show blind faith and belief on celebrities and many of them are even prepared to die for them. In some parts of the country, people sell blood to buy tickets to see their films. Common man blindly follows the words and deeds of the celebrities. In view of all these, celebrities have a solemn duty to justify the confidence reposed on them and live a noble and principled life which others can emulate.  However, it is painful to note that many celebrities shows utter disregard to common man’s faith by endorsing spurious and substandard articles injurious to health. While the celebrities who endorse these products do not themselves consume these items and will be holding them only for making the advertisement film, the common man who uses this based on the indirect recommendation of their idols face a grave health hazard.  Inspite of the fact that these celebrities are multi millionaires, the greed for money make them to endorse anything unbecoming to the status of men of principles. They may be able to escape scot-free with their clout and money power from Indian courts because though theoretically all are equal before the law, practically are all unequal before the law, they will be treated as guilty in the people’s court and in the court of Almighty.  There are only isolated cases where a celebrity refused to endorse unhealthy products. One shining example is legendary Badminton player and former All England Champion Pullele Gopi Chand who refused to become brand ambassador of an aerated drink because it is injurious to health.  He is a true nationalist and patriotic person who set up a Badminton Academy with his lifelong savings.  He even had to mortgage his house to find funds for the Academy.  It is gratifying to note that his efforts and sacrifices put paid off as his Academy did produce several world class shuttlers like Saina Nehwal, P V Sindhu, P Kashyap,  K Srikanth etc to name a few.  How many of our so called celebrities have contributed to charitable and philanthropic   activities beneficial to the common man or any national duty to uphold the prestige of the country in the international forums.  Owning sports teams is for their passion and publicity only and cannot be treated as a national service.  Have any of them shown the sagacity to adopt few talented sports persons and groom them to create Olympic and World champions thereby upholding the prestige and status of the country in the international forums? Have anybody started   hospitals or educational institutions for the under privileged sections of the society? Bill Gates the wealthiest person of the world spends substantial portion of his income on charity. Did any of the Indian Billionaires and celebrities follow a fraction of his noble example?
Respected celebrities.  If you cannot help the suppressed, oppressed and depressed class of society and the common man who constitute a major chunk of your fan following, at least do not play havoc with their lives by endorsing spurious and sub standard items injurious to health. Greed for money breeds corruption and amassing money by unprincipled and dubious methods is also a part of corruption. Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi has rightly said that God has given everything to meet the needs of the people but not to meet the greed of the people. It is ridiculous to amass wealth for your siblings and future generations as it will make them lazy, lethargic and mediocre.  One can neither take a single penny at the time of their death nor open a bank account in the other world (Heaven or Hell or anything else).  Earning money is not a bad thing provided it is earned by ethical and moral means. Celebrities should not stoop to the level of petty politicians, for whom cheating and dishonesty are their fundamental rights. They befool the common man by giving false promises and the politicians who can befool the maximum people for the longest time are considered as the most successful politician. No wonder, even today politics is considered as a profession unfit for men of principles and is the last refuge of a scoundrel. Barring exceptions, politicians command respect from their own party men only, whereas celebrities command respect from people cutting across politics, caste, region, religion etc. Please do not allow to destroy the confidence created by sustained work by your own unprincipled actions. It takes years to build an image but takes only seconds to shatter it.

Once again I appeal to the celebrities not to endorse spurious things or do anything harmful to the people or the country which will only help to rattle the confidence reposed by millions of people across the world. Celebrity status is not permanent as today’s hero will be tomorrow’s Zero.

Neglect of Athletics

Neglect of Athletics.
Athletics is the most glamorous event in the Olympics and an athletic medal carry much weight than any other medal.  In athletics also short distance running like 100 M and 200 M are considered to be the most fascinating events and 100 M winner in Olympics is considered as the fastest man on the earth. Despite the glory of athletics the world over, in India athletics is a neglected field. This is evident from the fact that so many promising and talented athletes emerge at junior and sub junior levels, but many of them go into oblivion before reaching senior level due to lack of recognition, lack of facilities etc.  Many people especially the youngsters may not believe that way back in 1952 Lavy Pinto reached the semi finals of 100 M and 200 M at Helsinki Olympics.  After that we could reach nowhere near that standard including at Asian level.  India’s latest best performance in short distance was at the 2000 Jakarta Asian Championship, where Anil Kumar won silver in 100 M.
Competitions at international levels are very tough and it requires highest quality of training, best diet and much needed international exposure.  In fact training is required at foreign countries to enable them to compete with world class athletes.  P T Usha arguably the finest women athlete India have ever produced, did not get  much competitive exposure as there was no pacers to enable her to improve her timings.
Anil Kumar silver medalist at Jakarta championship recently revealed, “I was so confident after that Asian Medal; I even told officials that if I did not go below 10 seconds after American training, I would reimburse all the money they would spend on me. But it didn’t   work “. What more our authorities require to send a promising and talented athlete for foreign training? What a tragedy! Present day athletes will be also having lot of grievances and they have nobody, not only to air their grievances but also to share their sorrows and sufferings. It is the duty of AFI, SAI and Ministry of Sports to ensure that their genuine grievances are resolved to enable them to enable them to give their best performance at international competitions. Let us not wait till their retirement to know about their problems of the past. Anil Kumar’s startling revelations should be a lesson for the authorities to act without wasting further time.
Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports selected 45 sports persons for financial assistance under the Target Olympic Podium (TOP) scheme. Selected athletes include 17 shooters and six shuttlers and only 5 sports persons were selected from Athletics. The TOP list does not include 3 promising and talented athletes qualified for the world athletic championship, out of which one of them is “arguably the finest athlete of the country at present” as per Athletic Federation of India. The coach of an athlete OP Jaisha who qualified for World Athletic Championship  gets a salary of Rs 5 lacs plus accommodation plus perks whereas she don’t get even Rs 5000/= as monthly allowance.

The situation has not much improved over the years. Government spends crores of rupees in the name of sports, repeat in the name of sports, but only negligible percentage reaches the sports persons. No wonder we return from international sports meets with peanuts and become a laughing stock in the eyes of the world.

Let us hope for a favourable change and India becomes a super power in sports at least in Asian circuit. Legendary athlete Milkha Singh has a dream to see an Indian athletic winning an Olympic Medal in athletics during his life time. We can only hope and pray that his dream will become a reality.

A Small Gift and Great Joy

A small gift and great joy.

The small shop from where I regularly purchase vegetables, a little girl sits in the absence of her father. She is able to calculate the price of vegetables correctly even if the weight is not in multiples of 250 grams. Today I asked her as to how much marks she got in the examination. Despite having no tuition and spending lot of time in the shop, she got 86 % marks. I told her that I wanted to gift a pen to her. She was reluctant to accept saying that she is already having a pen. I suggested her that she can ask her father and if he approves, then only I will give the gift. In the meantime her father came and the girl narrated the story. He was very happy that somebody is appreciating her daughter on her academic excellence and wants to give a gift. In fact her father was not aware of her exact percentage of marks as she corrected him while replying to me. I took her to the nearest shop which is barely 5-6 meters from her shop. I told the shop keeper to show the best quality pens and she shot listed 2. She was confused whether to take this one or that. Then I advised her to take both. She was so excited and thrilled as she ran to her father with pen on both hands. I could see the joy and ecstasy on her little face which cannot be measured in money terms. Let us hope that she will continue to excel in studies in the years to come.

Trial Run at Lodhi Road

Age Dispute

Age Dispute (Not of Gen V K Singh)

Monday is the weekly off at PDPK (Poorv Delhi Khel Parisar) where I daily go for swimming. Earlier it was completely closed on Monday and now it is open to walkers and joggers on Monday. Yesterday I went there for a trial run. I requested the person sitting in the office (who is known to me) to come with me for running. When he was little hesitant, I told him that I am elder to him, and if I can run he too can run. When he does not seems to be convinced about my seniority, I told him that I am 65. Then he replied that he is 63. In that case, I told him that he is 2 years younger to me.  But he countered that he is elder to me by 2 years. I am confused as both are sticking to their claim. At this point I even thought of referring the case to General V K Singh, who is expert on such matters. On further verification I found that his year of birth is 63 (1963) whereas my age is 65. I told him that my year of birth is 1950. Accordingly he is 13 years younger to me. As a proof of my age, I showed my membership card. He could not believe his eyes, but he had to believe the record prepared by his colleague.
